Qaf long-form · YouTube film · for review
A 13-minute paper-collage documentary on why the Qur'an forbade wine in stages: wine in Arabian life, thirteen Meccan years of belief before law, the three Medinan verses and their occasions, the day Medina poured its date wine into the lanes, and A'isha's own explanation (Sahih al-Bukhari 4993). One sealed jar, never touched by a hand, is found a step nearer the door after each revelation.

Why wasn't alcohol haram right away in Islam? How wine was forbidden gradually, in stages, and why A'isha said it came in that order. No music: only natural sound, paper and voice. For about thirteen years in Mecca the revelation spoke of belief, and wine was not yet forbidden. In Medina the prohibition of khamr came in stages: Qur'an 2:219 weighed wine and gambling, 4:43 kept it away from the prayer, and 5:90-91 forbade it, after the battle of Uhud (scholars differ on the exact year). On the day of the ban, the house of Abu Talha poured out its date wine, and it ran in the lanes of Medina. This paper-collage documentary follows each stage of the prohibition of alcohol, and ends with the reason A'isha (may Allah be pleased with her) gave for why it was forbidden gradually, as Ibn Hajar, al-Shatibi and al-Sa'di explain it.
